1. Your Financial Snapshot & Goals

Start by entering your current financial details and your desired retirement lifestyle. This information is used to calculate your basic FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) number and a baseline projection for when you might reach it.

Major Life Events, Lump Sums & Recurring Incomes

Add one-time or recurring cash flows (e.g., college costs, inheritance, pension). Important: All amounts should be entered as the total value for the year (e.g., enter $12,000 for a $1,000/month expense). For events spanning multiple years, define a start and end age.

2. Your FIRE Projection Summary

Calculation model 2.2.0 · contributions at month end · values shown in today's purchasing power

This is your baseline projection. It assumes your investment returns are the same every year. Use this as a starting point before stress-testing your plan in the Advanced Simulation section below.

Adjusted FIRE Number

Annual spending not covered by ongoing income, divided by your withdrawal rate. This is a planning target, not a guarantee.

Time to FIRE

Time to reach the withdrawal-rule target.

Age at FIRE

Your age when the withdrawal-rule target is met.

FI Date

Calendar date of reaching the withdrawal-rule target.

Savings Rate

Percentage of gross income saved annually.

Years of Expenses Covered (Current)

Current savings cover this many years of retirement expenses.

Total Contributions to FIRE

Total amount contributed until FIRE.

Total Growth to FIRE

Total investment gains by FIRE.

Savings at FIRE

Projected savings when FIRE is reached.

Coast FIRE Number

Amount needed at Coast Age to reach FIRE by Target Age with no further savings.

OPTIONAL ADVANCED CHECK Stress-test assumptions Return and retirement spending.

Drag for a quick comparison or type an exact value. Only the pre-FIRE return changes; inflation, post-FIRE return, contributions and events stay the same.

The slider covers 50%–150% of current spending; the exact field accepts values outside that range. Current expenses and contributions do not change.

Target accumulation and retirement drawdown answer different questions. “Sustained” means this deterministic path funds modeled obligations through the selected terminal age; it is not a success probability. Use the simulation tools for historical-sequence and randomized-path questions.

3. "One More Year" Scenario Analysis

This section helps you quantify the financial benefit of working a few extra years past your projected FIRE date. See how it impacts your final portfolio value and the lifestyle it can support.

Impact of Working 1 Extra Year(s)

New Portfolio Value at Retirement

Projected total savings after extra working years.

New Retirement Age

Your age after working extra years.

Increased Yearly Spending Possible

At the original withdrawal rate; this spending amount is not a guarantee of lasting to age 95.

Or, Funds Last Until Age

If maintaining original spending level (projects up to age 95).

4. Potential Early Retirement Income & Capital Growth

This chart shows how different savings rates impact your accumulated capital (dashed lines, right axis) and the sustainable monthly income it could generate (solid lines, left axis). Comparisons use your contribution growth, inflation and scheduled events, and continue saving through the chart horizon. The income line uses your withdrawal-rate assumption, not a guarantee.

5. Advanced Retirement Simulation

This is the most important step for stress-testing your plan. While the baseline projection assumes constant returns every year, this section simulates real-world uncertainty.

Historical Cycles: This method applies overlapping sequences from recorded US stock, Treasury and inflation data. Annual returns are spread geometrically across months, so it is a stress test rather than an exact replay or an independent probability estimate.

Monte Carlo: This method generates random paths from your average-return and volatility assumptions. It uses a simplified independent normal annual-return model; it does not predict the future.

Stocks Bonds
60% / 40%

S&P 500 total returns, 10-year Treasury total returns and December-to-December CPI-U, 1928–2025. Assumes annual rebalancing.

Checked on retirement anniversaries. It reduces only baseline spending funded by the portfolio; scheduled expenses stay due. Spending reverts when the real portfolio recovers to its initial value.

Success Rate

Paths meeting all modeled obligations through age 95.

Median Final Value

50th percentile portfolio value at age 95.

10th Percentile Value

A "bad outcome" scenario at age 95.

90th Percentile Value

A "good outcome" scenario at age 95.

Years w/ Reduced Spending

Median number of years spending was cut.
